Suicidal Seduction: Guilty on all counts

10/02/06  ||  Global Domination

This review was written by ex-staffer/cocksmoker Chazz.

I have to admit, I’d never heard of Suicidal Seduction before starting this review, and I have pretty much zero information on the band. Looking at their website, they seem to be yet another Swedish death metal band, and have been around for quite a few years now. Why they have only released two of these 4-song mini albums is a mystery to me, because after a few listens of “Guilty on All Counts”, I’m a bit impressed to say the least.

The first thing that caught my ear was the “Americanized” sound of the death metal found on “Guilty on All Counts”. I hear a lot of bands from the US infusing a Swedish sound, and vice-versa, but Suicidal Seduction sound to me like one of the few bands mixing equal parts of these two styles into their music. And when I talk about the Swedish or American sound, I’m talking pretty old-fucken-school here. As bad as you might imagine that sounding, it actually works quite well; they never get overly melodic, or too chug-happy, the songs actually flow along quite nicely.

Musically, these guys honestly aren’t anything tremendous. They can play, don’t get me wrong, but nothing, including the vocals/drums/bass/guitars, really stands out and has me wacking off. The band, as a whole, sound really good together, and that’s what makes this MCD stand out above a lot of other metal albums I’ve heard recently. I can see how these guys might be classified as a death-thrash band, and that wouldn’t be very far from the truth. You aren’t going to find any technical riffing here, clean vocals, or any hyper-speed blastbeats parts to these songs, Suicidal Seduction are all about the groove. And groove they do.

At a time when the death metal scene is full of bands who don’t seem to give a fuck about their songwriting, half-assed performances, and demo-quality production (hello Beheaded), these four songs are quite refreshing. The production here isn’t stunning or anything, but it fits the music and sounds all fine. My only complaint is with some of the samples they chose, they seem to be mixed a bit loud and up front, I think they would have had more impact and provided a bit of atmosphere had they been relegated to the background. This is a pretty minor complaint.

Since this is an EP, or MCD, whatever you want to call it, I’m not giving it a score, but I will give it a “thumbs up” for sure. These guys show a whole lot of promise and I’m expecting their eventual full release to be pretty fucken excellent. If you are in the mood for some well played gooving death metal, with a bit of melody and rawness to keep it real, give this a shot.
